Redrum Time Lies is the spin-off to the thrilling story that started in Redrum. Dr. Fraud has been released and he is back to his perverse practices, this time presenting a new treatment, the antipsychotic serum N1T3M4R3. Inspector Ravenwood, Rose's uncle, decides to put an end to the career of the person who has ruined her niece's life. That objective takes him back to the asylum, where a macabre plan awaits him.
Playing both, the inspector and his niece, your quest starts right when you get to the asylum. Surprisingly enough, Rose will be there to help you, actually her aid will be essential to advance in your search. Finding the doctor won't be the easiest task, as you can imagine, and there are plenty of puzzles and enigmas to solve before even getting close to him. The asylum hides the most dreadful secrets, and it is up to you to find out what the doctor has been up to all this time. One of your main goals before finding the doctor will be to free Fraud's victims' souls. For that you need to enter their dreams as these may hide the key to solve a puzzle. It is Rose who, making use of her mental powers, will get into the victims minds to find objects and information leading to the doctor, and solve whatever task she finds inside; a hidden-object scene, sliding or jigsaw puzzles, and more. Victims carry a quite perturbing story on their backs, which you get to know from the reports on their rooms, and their nightmares are often populated by fears, obsessions, or childhood traumas. The game illustrates all this in full detail. Some scenes can be really frightening, that's why it is not recommended to kids nor to very sensitive people.
Successfully completing a riddle will grant you an item for your inventory, or a rose to throw into the hall's fountain. But freeing a person's soul implies more than just solving a puzzle, most of the time, you will need to get into the dreams of other patients to find objects that could help another person. This forces you to go back and forth from one hall to the other and revisit rooms several times. To ease this task, the game includes a map that not only indicates your location but also allows to jump to a place directly from it.
Though gruesome and scary, the game is really fascinating, not only for its solid plot, but also because every detail in the visuals or the story shows a lot of work and attention to detail. Quite often, it puts you in that thin line between reality and the oneiric world, and that can be quite an experience. One more time, I highlight the fact that the game is not for all, but those who like thrilling stories are sure to enjoy it.
